Get a close up look at the landfill’s newest heavy machinery

A $1.1 million trash compactor is crawling over debris at the Mesa County Landfill. The Bomag 1173 was purchased by the county as part of scheduled equipment replacement.

It was assembled and delivered to the landfill at the end of July. Cory Silva, Solid Waste Site Manager for Mesa County, shows some of the features of the machine in the following video.

“We receive construction debris, household waste and biosolids waste from wastewater treatment plants. This machine will help us process that waste,” said Silva.

The compactor, a large, highly specialized bulldozer, weighs 120,000 pounds and has a front blade that’s just over 18 feet wide. The compaction wheels, which tower over most adults, have 66 teeth each that pack down trash as they travel around the landfill.
