Electronics recycling event collects more than 100,000 pounds of electronics
The City of Lawrence’s 2026 Electronics Recycling Event brought in a major community response on Saturday, Aug. 8, collecting 100,220 pounds of electronics for recycling.
This year’s event was held at a new location, the Douglas County Fairgrounds, and welcomed 1,077 vehicles throughout the day. Residents brought in a wide variety of old, unused and hard-to-recycle electronics, helping keep more than 50 tons of material out of the landfill.
Items included 85 cathode ray tube (CRT) televisions and more than 560 flat screen televisions and monitors. Event staff and volunteers also recycled 800 pounds of cardboard generated during the event.
The annual Electronics Recycling Event gives Douglas County residents a safe, responsible and convenient way to recycle electronics that should not go in trash or recycling carts. Items such as televisions, monitors, computers, printers, cords, small appliances and other electronics can contain materials that require special handling, making proper recycling an important part of responsible waste management.
The City thanks Teknix Solutions for sponsoring this year’s event, as well as the volunteers, City staff, and event partners who helped make the day run smoothly.
The strong turnout at this year’s new location shows how much residents value responsible disposal options and how community partnerships can help make large-scale recycling events successful.
